Facing the facts: ranging from the first century A.D. to the present, "Retratos," an exhibition of portraits that travels this month to Washington,

Driven by the engines of identity, status and culture, portraiture in a considerable variety of forms contributes to the ongoing development of artistic expression in Latin America. The product of a complex, multi-institutional endeavor, the traveling exhibition "Retratos: 2,000 Years of Latin American Portraits" consists of more than 100 objects in a chronological survey that ranges from pre-Columbian to modern and contemporary examples. (1) Beginning with earthenware objects identified as portraits by unknown hands, "Retratos" then focuses on the religious and secular portraiture of the viceregal period (1492-1810). Next, with rather more emphasis on the attractions of a lively narrative than on a practitioner's form or technique, the exhibition provides an overview of the increasingly sophisticated tastes of artist and subject alike during the 19th century, the time of Latin America's various struggles for independence.
