Lord of the rings? Promise rings are now a symbol of virginity

SHE CALLS IT a promise ring, but the promise isn't one she made to her boyfriend.

Carerra Lack, 16, wears the small silver band on her left ring finger as a symbol of her pledge to abstain from sex until marriage.

"My mom gave it to me as a symbol of my purity," says the high school junior and Manteca resident. "On my wedding night I'll take it off and give it to my husband as a symbol that I waited for him."

According to True Love Waits, an international campaign promoting abstinence among youths, 2.5 million young people in America have pledged to remain virgins until they marry.

While the controversy grows surrounding abstinence-only versus comprehensive sex education in American schools, recent studies raise questions about the effectiveness of such pledges.

Lack says she and her younger sister, Erica, made their abstinence pledges at the end of a six-week program at their church.

"We weren't pressured into our decision at all," she says. "But our mom still reminds us about 200,000 times a week to wait until marriage."(Continue Reading)
